WORKSHOP: “The Biodiversity of Trematodes of Fishes”

Date: Monday, 31th of August 2015, from 9h. to 13h (before 9ISFP and simultaneous to the “Epidemiology, prophylaxis and control of parasites in aquaculture” workshop).

Location: Auditorium Marie Curie, Science Park University of Valencia

Chair: T. Cribb

Contact person: T. Cribb (t.cribb@uq.edu.au)

Objectives: The workshop will consider progress in the biodiversity of fish trematodes in terms of description of species, estimation of phylogeny, elucidation of life-cycles and characterisation of host and biogeographical distributions. The goal of the workshop is to summarise (a) the state of the art and (b) consider activities and best-practice that will move the field forward. Papers presented will not seek to present original research per se. Papers arising from the workshop may be published in the first issue of Systematic Parasitology in 2016. The program is likely to include presentations considering the state of knowledge of trematodes of fishes (freshwater, Indo-Pacific, Atlantic and Polar Regions), current phylogenetic understanding, best practice in morphological description of species, best practice in molecular characterisation of species, and the role of databasing. It is hoped that there will be discussion of a possible future dedicated International Workshop on Trematode Biodiversity. Potential contributions to and involvement in the workshop are warmly invited.

WORKSHOP:  “Epidemiology, prophylaxis and control of parasites in aquaculture”

Date: Monday, 31th of August 2015, from 9h. to 13h (before 9ISFP and simultaneous to the “The Biodiversity of Trematodes of Fishes” workshop).

Location: Auditorium of the Research Institutes, Science Park University of Valencia

Chairs: F.E. Montero & B. Nowak

Contact person: F.E. Montero (Francisco.E.Montero@uv.es)

Objectives: The 9th International Symposium on Fish Parasites provides a unique opportunity to bring together international researchers with different expertise, coming from different geographical regions worldwide in order to obtain the broadest possible view of the occurrence and impact of parasites in mariculture around the world. Participants will have the chance to discuss and develop recommendations in a common round table.

Issues: Outlook in different geographical regions; Diagnosis; Control and treatment; Concerns of the aquaculture business.

WORKSHOP : “Myxozoa”

(during 9ISFP sessions at Symposium Venue, Faculty of Pharmacy University of Valencia)

Chairs: O. Palenzuela & A. Sitja

Contact person: O. Palenzuela (oswaldo.palenzuela@csic.es)

Objectives: Following the series of Myxozoan Workshops organized by the Myxozoa Network (www.Myxozoa.org) during the main International scientific meetings in the area since 2004, outstanding presentations focused on current myxozoan research will be grouped in a dedicated session. In addition, time for a more open discussion on specific topics interesting for the myxozoan research community will be allocated. Researchers interested on suggesting or introducing specific topics are encouraged to contact the chairpersons.

WORKSHOP : “Biobanking: a new approach for improving research on fish parasite biorepositories”

(during 9ISFP sessions at Symposium Venue, Faculty of Pharmacy University of Valencia)

Chairs: A.F. González & S. Pascual

Contact person: S. Pascual (spascual@iim.csic.es)

Objectives: The general idea around the workshop on biobanking for parasite biorepositories is the presentation and future implementation of banking platforms for samples and associated data assuring the traceability of the processes involved and the high-quality of stored samples.

Furthermore, the new paradigm beyond these platforms is providing a banking network for exchange of parasite material that allow a best-value for money approach and a significant improvement for high quality research.

Issues covered: The biobanking concept; Infrastructure and management software; Architectures and operational; Cost-benefit analysis.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE FORUM: “New projects & courses”

(during 9ISFP sessions at Symposium Venue, Faculty of Pharmacy University of Valencia)

Chairs: A. Sitja & T. Raga

Contact person:  A. Sitja (ariadna.sitja@csic.es)

Objectives: The general idea around this workshop is the presentation of new national and international projects related to aquatic parasites currently underway and to explore the possibilities of new collaborations and training programs for future international calls. Opportunities offered in the new EU Horizon 2020 program to support aquaculture research and innovation will also be presented. Those researchers interested in having a time-slot to present their offers/projects/ideas are encouraged to contact the contact person to participate in this forum.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE FORUM: “European Centre of Ichthyoparasitology, Czech Republic: promotion of a research and training centre”

(during 9ISFP sessions at Symposium Venue, Faculty of Pharmacy University of Valencia)

Chairs: T. Scholz & M. Gelnar

Contact person:  T. Scholz (tscholz@paru.cas.cz)

Czech fish parasitology has played a leading role at the international level since the late 1960’s when J. Lom, R. Ergens and F. Moravec started their scientific careers. In 2012, the European Centre of Ichthyoparasitology (ECIP) headed by their followers received financial support from the Czech Science Foundation for seven years (2012–2018) with the main focus on formation of young researchers and a more intensive international collaboration.

ECIP is based on complementarity of three research teams dealing with unicellular and metazoan parasites of fish and application of a wide spectrum of different methodological approaches to studying the diversity, life-cycles and phylogeny of major groups of parasites (protists, myxozoans, monogeneans, cestodes, trematodes, nematodes, and parasitic crustaceans) and their relationships with fish hosts. Research is performed in the following four modules, each of them reflecting different methodological approaches: (i) Diversity of parasites and adaptation to parasitism; (ii) Phylogenetics and molecular taxonomy; (iii) Host-parasite relationships and molecular interactions; (iv) Evolutionary epidemiology and behavioural ecology of parasites. In addition to a high-quality research based on multidisciplinarity and international collaboration, teaching and training young researchers in a wide spectrum of methods used in studies on fish parasites represent key activities of ECIP.

Objectives: In an open session of the International collaborative forum that will take place during the 9th International Symposium on Fish Parasites in Valencia, research and teaching activities of ECIP will be briefly presented to promote more intensive collaboration with researchers throughout the world, especially with talented young researchers from the developing countries. One of the principal activities of ECIP in the forthcoming years (2016–2018) will be organisation of international teaching courses and specialized symposia such as the 8th International Symposium on Monogenea in Brno in 2017.

Researchers interested in receiving more information before the Symposium are encouraged to contact the contact person.
