Bartholomew, Jerri L.

Professor, Head of the Department of Microbiology and Director of the John L. Fryer Salmon Disease Laboratory, Oregon State University, USA. Research in my laboratory focuses on pathogens that affect the health of wild and hatchery-reared Pacific salmon, particularly myxozoan parasites. Current research topics include: how myxozoans invade their hosts and whether this could be used in developing treatments, how parasites are affected by the immune response of the host, and how this unique group has evolved and diversified. Much of our research is conducted in large river systems, which is allowing us to address issues such as water management and climate change effects.

Littlewood, Tim

Tim Littlewood is a molecular systematist focussing on the phylogenetics of flatworms. In particular he is interested in the diversification of parasitic flatworms, especially cestodes and trematodes. Interested in applying modern sequencing techniques for systematics, diagnostics and making best use of historical collections Tim’s research is integrative and collaborative. He has contributed to180 papers and book chapters. Tim is currently Head of Life Sciences at London’s Natural History Museum.

Nilsen, Frank

He is a Professor in fish health at the University of Bergen, Norway and Director of the Sea Lice Research Centre, a center of research-based innovation appointed by the Research Council of Norway. Dr. Nilsen has published 90 articles in peer-reviewed journals and has a H-index of 26. Nilsen owners have interest in fish parasites and has a wide range applied molecular of tools in his work. A main interest the last years has been related to salmon louse. Establishment of laboratory strains and advanced methods like RNAi has enabled sophisticated studies investigating where gene function is to gain knowledge about key biological processes in the salmon louse. Nilsen has also central role in sequencing and annotation of the salmon louse genome that will be published soon.

Nowak, Barbara

Barbara is Professor at the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania (UTAS), where she leads Aquatic Animal Health research group.   Barbara has her PhD from Sydney University and has been working at UTAS since 1991.  Her research interest focus on various aspects of fish health, such as fish parasitology, fish immunology and fish pathology, including both wild and farmed fish but focusing mostly on Atlantic salmon and Southern Bluefin Tuna.  Barbara has published over 200 papers and supervised more than 30 PhD students.  She has received numerous awards for her research and postgraduate training.

Scholz, Tomáš

Professor, Head of the Laboratory of Helminthology at the Institute of Parasitology (and its Director from 2002 to 2012) in České Budějovice (Budweis), Czech Republic. He graduated under supervision by F. Moravec in 1989. He works on the systematics, phylogeny and life cycles of fish helminths, especially tapeworms (Cestoda) and trematodes (Digenea), including causative agents of fish-borne human diseases (Diphyllobothrium, Opisthorchis, etc.). He has co-authored more than 250 papers peer-reviewed journals, 5 monograps and 6 chapters in books. In the frame of a NSF-funded project to map global cestode diversity (2008–2013), he coordinated a group dealing with tapeworms of ectothermic vertebrates. He serves as Editor-in-Chief (and as Acting Editor from 1990 to 1998, with J. Lom as Editor-in-Chief) of an international journal Folia Parasitologica, which often publishes papers on fish parasites.

Sures, Bernd

Is professor in Zoology and head of the Department of Aquatic Ecology at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany) and visiting professor at the Department of Zoology at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa). His main research interests are in aquatic parasitology, ecotoxicology and invasion biology. Much of his scientific work contributes to the relatively young discipline of "Environmental Parasitology", with a focus on the interaction between environmental pollution and parasitism. His studies range from laboratory based investigations to large-scale field studies addressing parasite communities of fish and molluscs in river catchments and lakes. He has published > 120 peer-reviewed articles leading to a H-index of 42.

Thieltges, David

David is a marine ecologist with a soft spot for parasites. After obtaining a PhD at Kiel University (Germany), he spent four years on postdoctoral fellowships at Aarhus University (Denmark) and the University of Otago (New Zealand). Since 2010, he is a senior scientist at the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research where his research group aims to understand the extent and ecological role of parasitism in marine ecosystems. Current research topics include the role of parasites in food webs, the links between diversity and disease risk, effects of invasive species on native parasite-host interactions, and the macroecology and biogeography of marine parasites.

Timi, Juan

Dr. Juan T. Timi is a Professor at the Departamento de Biologia, Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata (UNMdP), and Independent Researcher of the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), Argentina. Currently is the head of the Ichthyoparasitology Research Group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas y Costeras (UNMdP-CONICET) that developes a research program on systematics and ecology of parasites of aquatic organisms, mainly marine fishes. His research has two main branches that include theoretical and applied aspects of ichthyoparasitology, such as parasite community ecology and parasites as biological indicators of fish populations. He is, at present an Editorial Board member of 6 jourrnals (Acta Zoologica Lilloana, Revista Argentina de Parasitología; Journal of Fish Biology, Folia Parasitologica; Journal of Helminthology and Parasitology).
